Hypnosis is really an interesting topic. Hypnosis has been used for a very long time, yet it appears that we are only just beginning to understand it's potential. The following is a quick snapshot of hypnosis through the years, and you might be quite intrigued by a few of its uses.
Hypnosis as a term was coined by James Braid in 1841, before that had been known as Mesmerism. The reason Braid choose to change the name was he had discovered new understandings in how hypnosis really works. Practitioners of Mesmerism had believed that it was because of some magical power or knowledge they held and practised, that people entered the state of mesmerism. However, James Braid came to the realisation that it was not due to any power the Mesmerist possessed, but instead the internal mental process of the subject that resulted in the mesmeric state.
Around the early 1900's when professor Emile Coue started exploring the usefulness of hypnosis in the form of auto-suggestion. Braid had uncovered at an earlier time that hypnosis can be created by people without the presence of a hypnotist, and this application for people to give ...
... themselves positive suggestions compounded his findings. This work he did complimented the works of Dr Braid before him. The concept of hypnosis as a state that was self induced, rather than one reliant on power of the hypnotist was now starting to become popular. The result was that people could now learn how to harness this power to enhance their lives.
Dr Sigmond Freud started working with hypnosis to supplement his ground breaking work on psychoanalysis toward the latter part of the 1800's, however he didn't see the benefits of it. Many people have said that, after his books went to print reported that he wouldn't have stopped experimenting with hypnotherapy, had he known and understood known as much about it earlier in his career.
Milton Erickson in the mid 1900's began working with a kind of hypnosis which became known as indirect hypnosis, which is still referenced by many therapists today. Indirect hypnosis was completely different to previous types of hypnosis; it was most effective for hypnotising people who disliked the authoritative approach.
Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, also a big influence on hypnosis around the same time, promoted a much more authoritative method compared to Doctor Milton Erickson. Dave Elman became famous for rapid and no-nonsense approaches, which laid the foundation of many modern approaches today. Mr Elman excelled in teaching those in the medical profession in hypnotic pain control, many of his teachings are still cutting edge even to this day, pain-free childbirth and hypno-analysis.
Ormond McGill, was referred to as 'The Dean of Hypnosis', he wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis and was also well known for his therapeutic work, in which he was excellent. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. The Dean passed away in 2005.
The main person behind Transforming Therapy was Gil Boyne, who died aged 86 in 2010. Boyne incorporated Elman and Erickson's techniques, and used these to create a therapy system used in many schools today. A lot of people have said that Gil was the unsung hero of modern rapid hypnotherapy techniques.
In the year 2014 there is a massive amount of world class therapists in the hypnosis world. Developments in the internet has resulted in a definite increase in communication between therapists. With these advancements hypnotists have made progression into the helping of physical conditions such as arthritis and I.B.S. in conjunction with the more well known uses, including weight loss and smoking cessation.
