Property managers at venues such as airports, hospitals, malls, stadiums, theaters, universities and offices complexes are keenly aware of these issues and are constantly working to provide better parking systems for patrons and guests. Fully Automated parking systems can solve a majority of parking issues, quickly and easily.

The Need of the Hour
Automated parking systems are fast becoming more and more sophisticated as technology advances. These systems park, track and retrieve vehicles that are stacked on several levels. Under normal conditions, 10 cars might be parked within a space, whereas stacking can increase this number exponentially. This system can be erected in virtually any empty space, subject of course to power supply and structural issues.

These state-of-the-art automated parking systems use automated lifts to park vehicles in their allotted space. This system effectively uses the space ordinarily taken up by ramps and thoroughfares. Vehicles are transported from entry to the parking spot by either horizontal platforms or vertical lifts, utilizing less space to park the same number of automobiles. ...
... This system requires very little manpower as it uses computers, mechanical components and cameras to move the vehicle to its designated space. Selecting the right parking system depends on specific site requirements.

Functionality of the system
Access control equipment including barrier gates, vehicle detectors, parking machines and card access control units aid in the smooth functioning of this system. Barrier gates are used to efficiently manage the vehicle’s entry. Vehicle detectors and sensors track the location and transition of the vehicle as it moves through the system. Parking payment systems work efficiently to collect payment for the time the vehicle is parked within the system. Card access control units assist in the functioning of the barrier gate system and prevent access to unauthorized users.

Advantages and disadvantages
As with everything, technology has its advantages and disadvantages. This system aids in increasing parking capacity by the efficient use of space and vehicles are handled with care reducing incidents of scratches and dents. Parking becomes a more simplified process, as there is no need to search for a parking space, as the system handles this function automatically. From an environment standpoint, because the engines are shut off once the vehicle enters the facility, emissions are reduced thus leaving a greener carbon footprint.

A disadvantage to a fully automated parking system is the constant and comprehensive maintenance that is required, as these structures and systems can deteriorate quickly due to the large number of vehicles that transition through the system 24/7.

Summary
Implementing fully automated parking systems reduces the need for mammoth parking facilities and increases overall parking efficiency. This type of parking system is gaining popularity worldwide and as the technology becomes more feasible, in future, it is likely to become a given standard within the parking industry.
