How To Build A Sailboat
During summer season, isn’t it nice to be on the beach sailing a boat? It is actually one of the best activities that can be done during hot season. But isn’t it more enjoyable for us not only to sail a boat but also to have that exhilarating feeling of being the one to have constructed the boat we are sailing? The feeling is more satisfying because building our own sailboat means that it is constructed the way we want it to be. Moreover, aside from the fact that it is cheaper to create a sailboat than to buy those branded ones, creating a sailboat offers not only a sense of pride but a sense of accomplishment as well.
The first step on how to build a sailboat is to look for building plans that suit us. There are actually many building plans available. Some are free and some are commercial. Whichever we choose, these are all successful building plans. Otherwise, they will not be available to the public. In the event that we choose to create our own building plan, there are several books that may be of help to us.
Lofting is the second step on how to build a sailboat. When we say ...
... lofting, it simply means that the plywood that will be used has to have necessary markings before it gets cut. Once necessary markings are done, then, the next step, of course, is to cut the plywood. In cutting, a circular saw or a jigsaw may be used although most builders prefer the former.
The fore and aft halves are the first parts that need to be assembled. This is the next step on how to build a sailboat. Assembling these accurately as well as the other parts that form part of the basic structure is important. We must take our time in constructing the basic structure so as not to allow the finished product to suffer.
The next step on how to build a sailboat is to use epoxy in brushing the joint edges and joining them together. Next, epoxy must also be used on the fiberglass tape before wrapping it around the joint. Once dry, the hull’s seams may now be sealed. A duct tape may then be used to plaster the outside seams while epoxy resin may be used to plaster the inside seams. But when the inside is already dry, it should also be covered with duct tape.
The next step on how to build a sailboat is to do the other details such as the seat, the deck, the storage area, among others. Once all these steps are touched, the sailboat is now ready to be painted. This of course is the last step on how to build a sailboat. Most owners of self-made sailboats used marine paint as it is proven to last the longest. However, house paint with good quality is also recommended.
