When an article is worth viewing, it is worthy of a display case. Long associated with fine art, memorabilia and retail endeavors, display cases are now designed for product safety, security and marketability. Items that generate interest and want to be seen can be safely viewed by thousands of spectators a day and be no worse for wear.

Even fine art pieces that may require a temperature controlled environment or may best be presented more brilliantly in a lighted case are being shown in 21st century display cases. That's just what the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be doing this fall when it exhibits the largest collection of Japanese arms and armor to ever leave the homeland. More than a million people are expected to view the showing of 215 masterpieces, 61 cultural properties and 6 important art objects.

Many of the more delicate items will be in specially designed display cases that will maximize the viewing but minimize the wear and tear and eliminate the possibility of damage or loss. Those are the features that have made display cases so effective and popular as a marketing tool.

The size of the display case as compared to the size of the displayed articles is the first consideration. Of course, the display case must work with the available floor space. Those are some of the decisions that the Florida United Numismatists Convention had to make when they announced they would have the famous Walton Specimen 1913 Liberty Head Nickel on display in Orlando. In the first-ever public appearance of the Walton Specimen, safety, security and accommodations for multitudes of viewers were the biggest considerations in selecting the velvet-lined display case.

Display cases have always been associated with impulse buying. A well orchestrated display case is a sale waiting to happen. Some vendors prefer wood cases, others go for brass or all-glass but whatever the choice, the fact is that products in display cases get attention. There is just something magical about a beautiful diamond ring of a gold necklace sparkling out through the glass of a display case.

Recently the Dutch Designer Marlies Dekkers exhibited the sexiest, most demure lingerie ever designed at the Rotterdam Kunsthal. The popular exhibition featured the designer's most daring creations of the past 15 years. Excited men and women left shaking their heads in awe. Dekkers not only knew how to design sexy lingerie but he knew how to display it in brilliantly organized display cases.

And, that is just how effective display cases can be. Get the correctly sized and configured case for the article to be displayed and then let the creative juices take the product the rest of the way. If an article should be seen, there is a display case just waiting to add to a brilliant presentation.
