Hertford is the county town, and along with Ware, Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Waltham Cross, forms a region known collectively as the Lea Valley. Within easy reach of London, Hertfordshire boasts some of the prettiest countryside towns and villages in the country.

Hertford
Hertford Castle is located in the heart of the town, hosting numerous events throughout the year that attracts many residents both from the town and the outlying villages. Admission is free. Here is a taste of things to come in the castle: September 6th is the Beating Retreat and Scottish Country Dancing event from 14:00-17:00 and the Autumn Wedding Exhibition is held on November the 1st from 11:30-16:00.
Shopping is another favourite pastime in Hertford and there are more than 200 shops to enjoy, mainly situated in the centre of the town. The town of Hoddesdon is the epitome of a small English town with friendly locals, bustling markets and unspoiled countryside. One of the main draws of Hoddesdon is its natural attractions which include parks and woodland as well as streams and ponds. There are a whole host of old buildings and houses to admire.
Broxbourne and Cheshunt
Paradise Wildlife Park is home to a varied collection of animals from around the world and is a popular place with families. Visitors can hire a boat and take a trip through the Lea Valley Park or visit the local mill, which dates back to the Domesday Book.
Many people visit Cheshunt to experience the relaxed atmosphere and old town feel to the place. There is ample opportunity to enjoy a walk around the town or surrounding countryside and the Sustrans National Cycle Route 1 runs through the town, making cycling a popular pastime.
Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey
Waltham Cross boasts a pedestrianised shopping centre that is home to a mixture of independent stores and chain shops that attract many from the nearby villages. A large Wetherspoons pub now stands where the old home of accomplished author Anthony Trollope once lived and local markets are still commonplace.
The Epping Forest and the River Lea form the surrounding area of Waltham Abbey, making it one of the most scenically beautiful towns in the UK. The Abbey dates back to the Middle Ages and is currently used as a parish church with its high nave and well kept building.
Buntingford and Royston
The medieval and Georgian buildings in Buntingford are the market town's main attractions and local events are held throughout the year in many churches as well as in the town centre, where the twice-weekly market is held. Royston Cave and Royston Heath, also known as Therfield Heath, make up the town's primary draws. The cave dates back to 1742 and is carved from chalk and it welcomes many visitors throughout the year.
