Ruby and Sapphire ball lenses are lenses that are made from Aluminum oxide. Ruby owes its red color due to presence of traces of chromium oxide. Though the physical and chemical properties of Ruby and Sapphire ball lenses are pretty the same, their optical properties are bit different. High Index Glass Ball Lenses are used, when applications require high power prescriptions and rimless mountings. Polished ball lenses are produced by a mechanical surface and geometry of each ball lens has an optical quality. The higher the index, the more efficiently the light is refracted. The positive of this property is that, less lens materials is required to provide the same amount of correction as standard plastic or glass lenses. The index of refraction is much higher for this ball, providing a shorter back focal length, which simplifies the fiber coupling process.
