If you're worried about travelling alone, especially if you're a female, you should consider taking some self-defense classes before you go. This way you can learn basic ways to get away from a mugger or rapist in the event that you need to. Most areas have a few schools that teach self-defense at reasonable rates.

For some the road trip is the only way to travel. If you're going to be taking a road trip do this simple things before hand so you don't end up stranded half way across the country. Number one, be sure to get an oil change! Number two, have your mechanic give your car a once over before you depart. The last thing you need in the middle of no where are easily preventable mechanical failures.

When you arrive at your destination don't hesitate to ask for help in any way. The locals of the town should be more than willing to give you good advice on where to visit. You want to make the most out of your experience so don't be shy, remember you'll probably never see those people again anyway.

If you want to plan a successful trip, you should establish a budget. Think about things such as travel expenses, accommodation, food, and money to visit attractions and pay for gas once on location. If your trip seems a little too expensive, look for cheaper accommodation or wait until you have enough money saved up.

If you are traveling by airplane, be sure to bring along your own headphones. Most in-flight entertainment systems today require that you wear headphones. You may be able to buy them in-flight, but it will be at a greatly inflated cost. Headphones are also a great way to create 'white noise' to block out your neighbors and/or the plane noise.

Consider flying on holidays if you are looking for a cheaper fare. Many people do not want to deal with the hassle of being in an airport on a holiday so flights are usually much cheaper. If you plan an early morning flight, you will not miss any of the holiday festivities.

No matter where it is that you are going, these common tips should help you in your travels. While each country has its own idiosyncrasies, the advice here should be kept in mind no matter where it is that you go. Now that you've got the advice, all that's left is picking the destination!
