Carbohydrate-rich foods are the most common and the best source of energy. These are usually foods that contain starch, which are converted into simple sugars that are utilized by the cells of the body. Lack of carbohydrates in the diet can cause lack of energy, inability to focus, and lack of physical and mental alertness. However, for people who have problems with sugar metabolism, particularly those with diabetes, too much carbohydrates and sugars in the diet can pose some critical health issues. Here are some of the most common carbohydrate and sugar-rich foods.

* Potatoes

You can have them baked, mashed or as a salad. Potatoes are great for lunch especially if you need a lot of energy for your activities during the afternoon. You may take them with some meat, fish and vegetables in order to have all the necessary nutrients for metabolism and immunity.

* Rice

In East Asian countries, the major source of carbohydrates in the diet are rice and other grain products. Like potatoes, rice is usually eaten with fish, meat or vegetables. For Asians, rice may be eaten during breakfast, lunch or dinner.

For those in Europe and other Western countries, breads and pastas are their primary source of carbohydrates. Different pasta recipes were created so that there is variation and incorporation of vegetables, meat and fish in the diet.

Breads are also common sources of carbohydrates. These may be eaten at almost anytime of the day and may be paired with any drink from coffee to juices.

* Sweets and other sugars

For people who need immediate sources of energy, they may take sweets such as chocolates or candies in order to supply their requirements. Those who expect to engage in sports and other athletic activities should have some sweets that they can take before or after their training.

* Fruit juices

Most people who would like to go on a diet are encouraged to drink a lot of fruit juices in order to help them lose weight. Known to few, fruit juices also contain sugars that increases a person's calorie intake. Thus, it is important that fruit juices are also computed when a person is trying to lose some weight.

Carbohydrates and sugars are necessary for the body in order to function completely. Depletion of blood sugar, which comes from carbohydrates, will have several health issues. However, only sufficient carbohydrates should be consumed to prevent obesity, excess weight and other medical conditions.
