Scaffolds - The Multipurpose Helpmate

Temporary structures used for providing a support to people and buildings while construction is known widely as the scaffolds. The scaffolds are tied together with the buildings for providing rigidity and safety. Scaffolds contain
• vertical elements called Standards
• horizontal elements called Ledgers
• Transoms kept at right angles above the ledgers
Standards help in transferring the weight of the structure to the ground. Ledgers help in connecting the standards together and the transoms increase the rigidity of the scaffold. There are many types of scaffolds namely
• Supporting scaffold- most common scaffold and usually used in construction works and works which require an elevation.
• Suspended scaffolding-it will be hung from the ceiling or from top of a tall building.
• Rolling scaffolding-similar to supporting type but base is attached to caster wheels so that they can be moved from one place to another.
• Aerial lifts-allows to access more than one level.
Scaffolds can be made of many items like wood, bamboo, metal etc. Aluminium scaffolds contain ...
... vertical and diagonal braces, platforms, toe boards, stabilizers and wheels. Either a fibre deck or wood are used for platforms. Fibre deck is preferred more because of their light weight. The scaffolds are normally built on top of plane and stable platforms. Aluminium scaffolds are well known for its load bearing capacity. Another attractive feature of this scaffold is its cost effectiveness.
Mobile scaffolding is used in areas where ease of access is a main factor. Though mobile constructs are hazardous at times it is widely used because it can be used in many applications whether indoor or outdoor. There are fixed and semi permanent scaffolds. Fixed scaffolds are kept permanently on a place while semi permanent scaffolds can be moved to another location before reconstructing it again.
There are many scaffolding companies across the world though scaffolds can also be build at home itself. Wooden scaffolds are easier to build. Before one starts to work with a scaffold they should be properly trained. It should be ensured that the employers who use the scaffolds should have a license and they should be legal. Scaffolding is a temporary structure used to support people and material in the construction or repair of buildings and other large structures. It should not be overloaded with weight.
Easy access and cost efficiency are the highlighted features of scaffolds. These multipurpose support structures can be used for either small works at home or for big works at business firms. Security provisions are also to be considered to avoid hazardous situations.
