What are TV listings?

TV listings are a foolproof way of finding out what is on the television, at what time and on what channel. There are so many channels available to us these days that keeping a mental tab on what we want to watch is getting increasingly harder, and for the majority of us who live a fast-paced way of life it is far easier to pick up a guide and plan our schedule around our ‘must-see' programmes than it is to attempt to simply remember.

What do TV listings cover?

Not only can we now read what is on and when, but we can also get a sneaky glimpse into what the programmes are actually about. There are specialised sections dedicated to the latest soap storylines, previews on films and a taster of what Sir David Attenborough will be teaching us in his next fascinating series. The most popular programmes will not only have a rundown on what is up and coming in the many pages of the supplement but under the listing itself there will be a snippet of what will be happening in that particular episode. Genius.

All of the big companies in the print industry have websites which feature a TV listing section and with the whole world being so computer-orientated; are TV listings in print coming to an end? The simple concept of providing the public with a way to see what is on the television has progressed into an in-depth analysis of everything you could ever want to know, from times, days and programmes to complete cast lists, interviews and future plotlines.

A new phrase has been coined by Internet experts and the word Googlecentric can now be used to describe someone who thinks around all things Google, making a strong claim that Google and the Internet play such a relevant part in everyday life that it is now possible to be Googlecentric. The fast-paced life that many of us lead means that we are always demanding that life is as easy as possible, and, as such, TV listings have made the successful transition to the Internet allowing people to access the details of their night's couch potato activities from the crazy world of their office at work.

TV listing supplements now come with all market leading newspapers as well as appearing in magazines solely dedicated to TV listings, with the most famous and well-used publication being the Radio Times. Glossy covers revealing exciting plotlines draw in any unsuspecting window shoppers and tempt them into purchasing their TV listings in print rather than using the World Wide Web. There was a time when the Radio Times had the industry covered and although they still hold fast in the sector, there are many rival publications attempting to steal their glory by revealing more and more story lines so far in advance we will soon be reading about an episode of EastEnders that isn't due to broadcast until 2011!

However when we view our TV listings there is no doubt that with more of us enduring busy work and personal lives TV listings are a great way to plan a little time out where we can enjoy looking forward to sitting down at 19:00, to watch the latest happenings in Emmerdale, before the family want dinner, the house needs cleaning, the children need to be put to bed, tomorrow's lunch needs to be packed, the washing needs to be put on, the ironing needs to be done and the list goes on
