Deaf Children Listen To Tina Turbin's Danny The Dragon Children's Book

Tina Turbin (http://TinaTurbin.com), author and humanitarian, recently brought her children's book Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy to Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf (http://BlossomSchool.org) for a special day of reading and fun and to encourage a group of kids who have less opportunity than other children. Blossom Montessori School is unique in that they use the Montessori curriculum is the starting point and then add processes, materials and methodologies suited to meet each individual child's needs.

Staring off, the kids had many questions for Tina such as how she got started as an author, how she created the book, what are her plans were and many other questions. Tina told them that when she was 16 she wrote her first book. From there she ended up getting married and having three kids of her own. Just two years ago all her kids had moved out and were on their own. At that point, Tina decided that she could put her attention on her writing and the arts. ... interpreter as Aija lives in another country. This fascinated the kids, who truly understand working through interpreters. Tina went on to explain that when she began working on the book, she had a well-defined sense of the characters including how they should look. Then, through the process of creating the book and working with the artist, the characters came to life. As Tina was relating this, you could see that many of the kids were coming up with their own book ideas.

After the question and answer period, Tina read her book to the students (using, of course, the school's very helpful teachers translated the reading into sign language). The children were delighted by the story and the colorful illustrations. After reading, there were additional questions asked and answered. The kids could not get enough of Tina, her stories and explanations.

At the end, the kids and teachers helped pass out stickers and bookmarkers specially made just for the occasion.

It was obvious that a few new writing careers were placed on the launching pad via this event. Hopefully we'll see more of Tina at other schools as her presence seems to ignite young minds.

A video of a signed reading of Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy is planned so that all kids can enjoy the book, even those who cannot hear.
