Solutions To Illiteracy Discussed On Blogtalkradio

If you happened to catch Joanie Winberg's Blog Talk Radio episode (http://TinaTurbin.com/r/?4) last week you would have been totally enlightened and entertained by Children's Author TIna Turbin, Tina is the author of the Danny the Dragon (http://DannyTheDragon.com) series as well as a writer for many magazines. The show began with a discussion about Tina's desire to write, from her first book at age 16 to getting married at 20 and having three kids and now, with all the children moved out and on their own, Tina has been able to come back full circle to her writing and the arts.
Tina discussed how to get your child onto the road to literacy. She suggest starting off early, before school age with visits to libraries and reading to your child. Taking time out to create those pleasurable moments, make it a priority. She remarks that, "Your child doesn't have anyone else." Ask you librarian for books that fit your child's needs and desires and also find books that you want your child to "absorb". When your child is reading, find games for your child, give rewards for reading. Use the internet as a resource for books and suggestions. ...
... The real key is the parents spending time.
Once they hit school, watch your child's progress. Take time to have your child read those simple books to you. If your child's reading assignments are too hard, cut back to easier readers. Tina offers TIPS (a TIP sheet) on her website, http://DannyTheDragon.com, for helping you assist your child in gaining the skills, at an early age, to be able to read and thus be successful in school and in later years. Tina brought up the fact that 78% of the prison population is illiterate. So maybe she has a very valid point when she says that no child is born wanting to be a criminal and that illiteracy is an important skill for success.
Tina goes on in the interview to describe the two methods of learning to read (one is phonics the other sight reading or basil) and how phonics use to be the way people were taught to read and how with the introduction of the basil method into the schools the overall statistics for literacy have drastically declined. Today, 59% of the nation's unemployed youth (16-21) are functional illiterate. Its very hard to get job skills if you cannot read.
