There are plenty of great Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs), and plenty of arguments over which one is the best of all time. Some of the highly ranking MMORPGs include Eve Online, Everquest I, Final Fantasy XI, and Warhammer Online. The essence of MMORPGs is that a large number of players interact with each other inside a virtual world. The genre first became popular in 1997. In an MMORPG, a player assumes the role of a fictional character, usually in a fantasy world, and controls that character's actions. The "world" continues to exist and evolve when the player is away from the game, so it is constantly changing.

More people would vote World of Warcraft as the best MMORPG of all time. It is a "pay to play" game, but players value it highly for the money. The game can be purchased at places like GameStop. World of Warcraft is based on the world of Azeroth and it centers heavily around player interaction. There is also a mode where missions and quests inside the game can be done alone, but major raids may take as many as 40 players to succeed. Characters in WoW can fight, but they can also have identities apart from that (like being a blacksmith).

WoW was the fourth released game in the Warcraft series, which began with Warcraft: Orcs - Humans back in 1994. WoW came out in 2004, which was the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft games. In 2007, an expansion called The Burning Crusade was release, and in 2008 Wrath of the Lich King was released. WoW has more than 11 million monthly subscribers, making it the world's most subscribed-to MMORPG. It is estimated to hold more than 60% of the MMORPG market.

Characters control their character avatar in a third person view (though there is a first person POV option). Characters explore, go on quests, fight monsters, and do many other activities. To enter the game, the player chooses a realm, which acts as an individual copy of the game's world and it has one of four rule sets. Realms can be player versus player or player versus environment, where the player concentrates on defeating monsters and going on quests. In creating their new character, players have to choose between the opposing factions Horde or Alliance. While characters from opposing factions can trade and communicate on a low level, only members of the same faction can share, speak, or email with one another. The player must select the character's species, such as Trolls or Orcs, and the class, which could be mages, priests, or warriors among others.

While there will always be debate over which game is the best MMORPG ever, no one can deny the huge popularity of World of Warcraft, a game which many people believe to be the best MMORPG ever.
