Parenting can be a challenging and rewarding thing to do, and you want to do your best job for your kids every day. You might have to go with your gut as to which parenting style is best because of how much bad information that there is on the topic. Most of us have experienced the inner voice that gives us advice on which direction to go and what choices to make. The following information will help you decide on the right parenting style for you.

Even though there are a variety of ideas about the preferred style of parenting, the consensus seems to be that the most effective approach is the one known as authoritative. An authoritarian parent will tell a child to obey a rule, "because I said so," whereas an authoritative parent will explain why the rule is necessary. The authoritative approach is one that aims for the happy medium between strictness and permissiveness. A child who grows up in an overly permissive household will often lack direction in life, but one whose parents are overly strict may have trouble thinking for himself. That's why, as a parent, the goal is to give your children just the right amount of ...
... freedom. When you're a parent, you have to keep in mind that your children are always watching you and often modeling their behavior after your own. Parents must, therefore, exhibit the kind of values they expect their children to take on. Some parents are inconsistent in this way -telling their kids not to do things that they do all the time. Telling your kids something only goes so far, but setting the right example makes a real difference. Children tend to emulate their parents in important ways, more than they usually realize. While telling your kids to behave in a certain way can be effective up to a point, setting a good example is much better.

Screaming at your kids because they are yelling at you is not the way to resolve such issues. Of course, we're all human, and sometimes when we lose our tempers, we're bound to raise our voices. The outcome from doing this to your kids can be large but might not be noticeable initially. Consistent yelling at your children will desensitize them, causing them to expect you to yell just for them to notice you. Your kids, in turn, may start to yell at other people at school or in other places which can become problematic. Instead of yelling, speak very softly so that your children will have to quiet down to listen to what you say. Parenting styles depend on both the personalities of the parents and the nature of the children. Over time, you'll notice that each of your children will require a different amount of discipline as each has an innate level of self-control. Due to the fact that every child that you have will have a different personality, each parenting skill that you try to implement will have to be modified in a variety of ways to work.
