Parenting is really hard and there are some skills that, if you do not possess them naturally, you need to work hard to develop as you go. So many parents simply do the same things their parents did and that doesn't always work out for the best. In this article we're going to examine some of the bigger skills that are essential for every parent needs to have.

Everybody has heard that it is a good idea to praise kids but you need to be very conscious about how you actually do that. Some parents don't praise their kids enough, but many others do so in a way that's not helpful. To use one example, the best thing is to praise kids for something they've worked hard at more so than something they do not have any control over. If a child is naturally intelligent, attractive or athletic, for example, to constantly praise them for this may be counterproductive and cause vanity or arrogance. On the other hand, praising a child for trying very hard to do well on a test or in a sports activity or school play is encouragement to continue doing their best. Every parent worries about keeping his or her child safe but he or she must ...
... also realize that there is no way to watch that child every second of every day. That's why its vital for you to give them the information they need
to get started as well as make sure that they know how to get to you or another adult who can help them if they need it. As soon you think your child will be able to retain the information take steps to make sure that she or he knows her or his full name, address and phone number. They need to know how to get hold of you both at home and at your work. You might want to give your son or daughter an emergencies only cell phone so that they can call you or 911 if they get into an emergency. Most of the cell phone providers have plans designated just for these situations. If your child is at a location where someone like a friend or relative is closer than you, make sure he or she knows how to reach this person.

As a parent you are going to naturally gravitate toward some parenting styles over others but that doesn't mean that your parenting style doesn't ever have to be modified--particularly if you operate in extremes. For example, there are some parents who are incredibly rigid and strict and that is often a reflection on how that parent was raised. In our current society, though, kids need to be raised to think independently and when you are too strict or authoritarian they do not develop this skill and either rebel at an early age or become far too docile and obedient for adult life. On the other hand, if you are too permissive, your kids won't have a good understanding of boundaries and will likely grow up to be very undisciplined.

Studies have proven that the best parenting style is what is called authoritative parenting which lies between permissive and authoritarian.

The above are some of the parenting skills that can be helpful in your relationship with your kids. Every parent has areas that are challenging, and this will vary based on the personality of your child as well as your own. You need to remember, for your own sanity, that parenting is a process and that it changes constantly as you and your kids get older but that having solid guidelines in place can be helpful both to you and your kids.
