Kashmir is the original queen of hills and if there is one city which does full justice to a tourist's expectations, it is Srinagar. It is the summer capital of the state and has served as a muse for poets and philosophers since time unknown. Srinagar sits at a decent altitude of around 1730 m and experiences friendly summer weather and cold winter climes. For a pleasant sightseeing, it is believed that summer is the best time to visit Srinagar. But then those who have had a winter trip out here beg to differ. Surely, the all-snowy charm of this destination cannot be undermined. Srinagar jaunt under a Kashmir honeymoon package makes for a surreally romantic sojourn. The Himalayas can always be counted to conjure the best of romance, and with some wonderful lakes for company, you can be sure that you will be right at the threshold of paradise in this part of the world.
Talking of lakes, the one that calls the highest shots is the Dal Lake. It spreads across several hectares in a rather magnanimous fashion and paves way for the livelihood of several people. Being bountiful in water and fishes, it helps many a people earn ...
... their daily bread and butter by running different services. There are vendors and flower sellers who set up floating stalls and shops over the lake. Houseboats or shikaras are heavily in demand. They also help locals to earn their bread. And to top it all, the Dal Lake also boasts of a floating post office. Why go to Bangkok to check out the floating market when this part of Kashmir is no less impressive?
Dal Lake has transformed itself slightly over the years. Now, its modern avatar is a lot more engaging since it encapsulates its adventurous side too. Sports lovers can take heart from the fact that it has set up numerous sporting games like water surfing, kayaking, angling, fishing and canoeing.
Srinagar is also popular for its gardens, temples and mosques. Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh are must-visit attractions. They are gardens from the Mughal Era and never fail to impress. One really cannot get enough of these places. They are green, historic and au natural. The Chashmashahi is another notable garden which is best known for its regal spring. It is not just beautiful to look but it also offers certain health-related benefits.
Amongst the religious attractions, the most prominent landmarks are the Jamia Masjid and the Shankaracharya Temple. But for those looking for more, the less notable attractions like Pathar Masjid and Rozahbal Mosque can be equally alluring. Though they do not usually feature in the must-visit attractions' list, they are enthralling in their own way and will give you plenty of soulful moments.
Wildlife features on the priority factor of many couples today. So, Kashmir tour packages from Delhi often have at least one wildlife expedition in the itinerary. Though the main city of Srinagar does not have any major wildlife corner, there is one at barely 22 km away.
