The editors at Popular Mechanics magazine were also impressed with the 2014 Mazda6, citing its 184 horsepower, 2.5 liter engine, its technology improvements, and the car's all over agility and handling during road testing. They also noted that while the car had the straightforward functionality of a sedan, it had "sports car looks" and "curves that would make a Maserati jealous". They also liked this vehicle's new SkyActiv technologies, which mean not only a better performing vehicle, but a safer one as well. The Mazda6's i-ELOOP generation system garnered praise as well from Popular Mechanics. This technology allows the car's braking system to effectively provide electrical power throughout the entire vehicle. As a result of all the improvements and new features, the magazine gave the 2014 Mazda6 their own "2014 Car of the Year" Award.

Car and Driver Magazine also weighed in with praise for i-ELOOP and the SkyActiv system, but was also much taken with the car's improved electronic steering system, and lighter engine bloc.
