There was a time when the various parts of the car performed isolated roles. If there was a connection it was only with components which were part of the same subsystem. But as the car evolved the interplay between the components increased. Why is it that this interplay has increased?

Well when cars were first invented they had a simple objective. They had to carry people from one place to another faster than they could go in a horse drawn cart. They really didn't have to be much faster than that, give a more comfortable ride than that or look more stylish than that.

But as people took the basic function of the car for granted they started to look at other aspects of the car. This meant that the performance of the car improved by leaps and bounds and in a short time of about a hundred years the modern cars look ultra evolved as compared to the basic cars that were first made.

This improvement in performance meant that components now depended much more on each other. If the improved car's engine meant it could go much faster then the suspension had to ensure it could take the extra forces and the car headlights ...
... had to be good enough at night to be able to drive safely at the higher speeds.

Now that the cars have become a high performance piece of engineering the headlights need to be high performance as well. This is because at night cars travel at very high speeds and yet the drivers need to be able to make decisions confidently. Even if you do not drive very fast, other drivers on the road will be driving fast and you should be able to see them clearly when they suddenly come into your driving path.

Therefore modern headlights are designed for modern driving. They really flood the road with a large amount of light yet they do not blind the drivers of oncoming cars too much. The direction of the beam can be changed at the flick of a switch. In general they take care of the lighting needs of modern driving at night.
