Your skin is the largest organ on your body. That's right—skin is considered an organ, and rightly so. It doesn't just sit there looking pretty; rather, it constantly fulfills dozens of functions without which we would be hard-pressed to survive. To fully catalog this list of functions would fill a book, but, briefly considered, there are three essential tasks your skin is in charge of.

First, your skin protects your insides from the outside world. Your largest organ accomplishes this by constantly supplying a fresh layer of dead skin cells to take the brunt of the damage that your daily unsavory scrapings inflict. If you've ever had a wound and bumped into something with it, you know how important this protection is.

Speaking of wounds, another property of your skin is healing. Healing is a complex and intricate process, but, speaking very generally, white blood cells migrate toward the site of the wound to mitigate the chance of infection, while your body releases growth chemicals to spur the healing process on. That red area around a healing wound? That's your skin at work.

A third crucial ...
... dermal duty is temperature regulation. When you're hot, blood vessels near your skin expand (which is why you get flushed when you're active). Sweating is also an important temperature regulation byproduct, as it cools your body when it starts to overheat.

As you can see, your skin is not something to ignore. When you do, problems like acne could arise. Acne is the result of dead skin cells and skin oils clogging hair follicles. Acne-affected skin is unhealthy skin. To help prevent it, you should wash your skin regularly with warm (but not hot) water to remove excess oils and dirt, which could exacerbate acne. Also be sure to use quality skincare products to regulate any potential breakouts you might have. Because of all it does for you, your skin ought to be treated well.
