On The Effectiveness Of Bodybuilding Supplements
The subject of bodybuilding supplements is a touchy one. On one hand, there are those that stand by them. On the other, there are those that consider them as scams. In today's age of freely available information, a lot of truths can be twisted and a lot of facts can be falsified. In the case of bodybuilding supplements, it's always the same question: are they helpful or are they harmful?
To answer this question, one has to walk in the shoes of the user and the non-user. For the non-user, supplements are not necessary to achieve a ripped build. This is true, as one can get a body like the good old movie action stars with just exercise and a good meal plan. For the users, supplements are necessary to provide them the nutrition needed to build muscle quickly.
If you really look at it, supplements do not work any magic. It's all science. It is not a mad scientist formula that transforms a Bruce Banner into the Incredible Hulk overnight. It merely accelerates the progress of bodybuilding. This is done through providing the bodybuilder with more strength and endurance to lift heavier weights and increase ...
... repetitions respectively. It also gives boosts their muscle recovery, allowing them to hit the gym more.
As a counter to this, non-users would say that supplements are not approved by the government. This is true not just for bodybuilding supplements, but for dietary supplements as well. Even some multivitamins aren't approved, and yet people take them.
Take creatine as an example. It has no effects on the body other than turning the muscles as the body's water storage. Bodybuilders use creatine supplements as a means to build muscle quickly by using water weight to their advantage. With creatine, they are able to do more repetitions, bump up the weight scale for lifting, and more. Upon stopping usage, their water weight goes down and their real musculature shows, but their strength and endurance remain.
However, there are a lot of people who would discredit creatine because of nausea, headaches, diarrhea, and other ill effects. Further backing these claims are those that develop kidney problems due to creatine usage. The masses then start to panic, but in reality, there is only misuse.
While not approved by the government, creatine supplements are considered the safest supplements with scientific trials showing no ill effects other than dehydration due to water being redirected into the muscles. Creatine users simple drink more water than they usually do to counter this effect. Those who had kidney problems have had them before their experience with creatine, and the supplement has exacerbated these said problems. They used creatine, which was not recommended for those with kidney problems anyway.
With that said, it is extremely important to do a lot of research before buying any supplements. To get a better body, you can do well without supplements. If you feel you need to incorporate them into your bodybuilding plans, at least consult your doctor first. Only by making sure your body will not have reactions to supplement contents will you be able to make sure they will work for you.
