Although headlights were an almost immediate need for cars once they were to be driven in the night tail lights were not immediately as important. Though now one cannot imagine a car without tail lights nor will the law allow it, their function is even today considered less critical than headlights. That their function is considered less critical than that of headlights has not meant that tail lights have been ignored.
