The Nissan Electric ZEOD RC Engine is not your grandmothers go to the supermarket hybrid car. Especially not the one that will run in the Le Mans 24 hour race this year. Imagine an engine that has more horsepower per kilogram than a Formula One race car that can fit in a suitcase and be put in the overhead compartment on a commercial airline. Then consider the same engine has an electric component for that no emission alternative while driving.

The Nissan Electric ZEOD RC (Zero Emission on Demand Racing Car) will be running out of garage 56 in the 2014 race at Le Mans. This latest entry by the Nissan Corporation will be the first car ever to run a full lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe powered completely by an electric engine. At Le Mans a full lap or fuel stint lasts approximately one hour. After the inaugural electric powered lap the car will then switch to the DIG-T R 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine to complete the rest of the race.

According to NissanNews.com this incredible engine is small enough to be carried and yes, will fit in an overhead compartment. At just 20 inches tall and 16 inches long (19.68" ...
... x 15.74" x 7.78") the engine weighs in at a whopping 88 lbs. Despite the diminutive stature of the engine the power output is in a class by itself.

Roaring around the track the car will be revving up to 7,500 rpm and produce 380 Nm of torque. This works out to a ratio of 10 horsepower per kilogram which is more than the ratio that will be used by the cars running in n the FIA Formula 1 World Championship this year. Those in attendance will also be able to experience the unimaginable speed of the electric engine as it flashes by at 300 km/h (186 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight portion of the stint.

A side effect of the light weight and incredible power will be less fuel consumption when you need to use that component of the engine.
