Karate has become one of the most popular kinds of martial arts in the world. We could just speculate as to the reason but most likely because it features all the elements of a great martial art. It's good for your physical fitness, you have the opportunity to take part in competitions if you elect to and it provides you with self defense skills that may protect you and your family. Karate which is Japanese for empty hand combines kicks, punches and strikes in an all round system that can be learned by men, women and young children. As a matter of fact, it is possible to get your whole family involved with Karate. In case you are wondering what would be involved in a regular Karate class, this article will give you a basic introduction.

Karate has several different forms and some are based on power whereas other styles rely more on speed. A starting place in a lot of classes is warming up with stretches and exercises. All of these warm ups help build our flexibility so that we can perform our kicks and moves without hurting ourselves. Therefore, conditioning is very important and specific exercises are intended ...
... to help you to do the techniques of Karate. You will find that after taking just a few Karate class sessions, you will be feeling stronger and more focused than ever before.

After your loosen up, you will begin to practice certain Karate moves. Stance and the way in which you place your feet is a crucial aspect and to make sure you are getting each part of the move right, you will sometimes practice a particular kick or punch many times. You're going to usually be shown the move first by your instructor and then you get the chance to do this yourself. The continual repetition can help make the moves you master become part of your instinct so that when you do a specific strike, it all comes to you naturally.

There's a term in Karate called "kata" and it is about doing a sequence of a variety of moves that involve kicks, blocks and strikes. If you happen to go to a Karate exhibition you will typically see kata performed and these are all skills you are going to learn as you progress through the grading system. Sometime during your lesson there will also be a chance for some live training with individuals of a similar experience to you. This gives you an idea of what it is like to face somebody in a situation where you may need your skills. The sparring will often only involve light contact but you will gain valuable experience of distance and angles when trying different types of strikes.

As you get to the end of lesson, you'll be winding down by doing several different stretches. Each club will have their own routine but you'll see that most will follow what's been discussed in this article.
