Changes To The Environmental Approvals Process At Ontario’s Ministry Of The Environment

In the province of Ontario, all businesses that releases pollutants into air, land, or water, or store, transport, or dispose of waste, must obtain their environmental approval or environmental registration from Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment.

Ontario’s Environmental Approvals process falls into two categories of activities:
Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR)
Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA).

The Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR) is an online system which is available for activities that pose minimal risk to the environment and human health, including:
heating systems
standby power systems
automotive refinishing facilities
commercial printing facilities
non-hazardous waste transportation systems
small solar facilities

If you are involved in any of the above sectors, your business must meet eligibility requirements to register, and fulfill obligations after you register. The facility is also subject to inspections by local Ministry of Environment’s District office.
