Gum Treatment Options

Early gum disease treatment is important in preventing the problem from becoming a more serious one, which can result to higher treatment expenses and more discomfort for the patient. If not solved early on, the gum disease can also lead to the loss of natural teeth.
The treatment to be given to the patient will depend on the specific gum problem, and the overall oral health condition. Proper diagnosis is needed to ensure that the appropriate treatment will be given in the earliest stages whenever possible, and also to make sure that the problem is stopped from being a more complicated concern.
Treatments for Gum Problems
Good oral hygiene practices are essential in the treatment of gum problems. Without following proper oral hygiene, the treatments will not be successful, or the effect will not result to long-term good gum health. Patients will be given detailed instructions on how to maintain good gum health even before the treatment for their gum disease starts, to make the overall treatment a more effective one.
Non-Surgical Gum Treatments – These are the treatments that do not involve surgery, ...
... and are usually done for milder gum problems. Mild gingivitis can be addressed by professional cleaning which does not need to go beyond the gum line. More aggressive forms of gum disease may need to be solved with deep root cleaning, which goes beyond the gum line for the removal of tartar and plaque deposits from the root surfaces.
Gum Surgery – When a deep root cleaning is not successful in removing all the tartar and plaque deposits, gum surgery may be the next course of action. The gums are lifted away to provide access to the areas where the plaque and tartar deposits are located, so these can be completely and effectively removed. A portion of the gum tissue may be removed as part of the surgical gum treatment.
Bone Graft Surgery – Severe gum disease can destroy bone tissue. A bone graft surgery is done to stimulate the bone tissue to regenerate, to prevent problems associated with jawbone deterioration or jawbone thinning.
Crown Lengthening – Healthy tooth structure can be restored with the help of a crown lengthening procedure, which is also done to improve the appearance of a smile by making the alignment of the gum line more aesthetically pleasing.
Gum Grafts – A soft tissue graft of gum graft is done to address gum recession problems, which cause the tooth roots to be exposed. The soft tissue graft will cover the sensitive tooth roots to solve teeth sensitivity issues, and protect the roots from damage and infection.
