Most of the household gadgets, chinaware, and furniture are existence necessities without which people cannot maintain living standards, or manage day-to-day activities. This makes it mandatory that most of one's stuff has to be transported, and good quality moving boxes are the one and only solution for that. When they have to shift to a new place, people do try to reduce the weight and volume of luggage with a yard sale, or donation to charities. These do work to a certain extent, but even then the things a human being has to carry with him could be substantial.

Quality moving boxes are differentiated from other general boxes because of their strength and durability, and the various sizes in which they are available. There are standard specifications regarding the strength and load carrying capacity of these boxes, and users should ideally check to ensure that the boxes they are given would satisfy their requirements.

The strength of moving boxes is mainly designated by what is known as Edge Crush Test or ECT. ECT is calculated as weight per inches in width. Edge Crush Test value should ...
... be a minimum of 32 for all good quality boxes. ECT mainly denotes the compression strength of a box, or the maximum load the boxes can withstand at any point of time. In the case of double wall corrugated cardboard moving boxes, ECT can be much more. For moving boxes with a cubic size, or volume, of more than 100 cubic inches, ECT may be more than 70 or 80.

On the bottom flap of moving boxes, the manufacturers always provide the ECT of the box, its stacking capacity, and the maximum weight that can be carried by the box. Users of these boxes should be careful never to exceed the weight limit that the manufacturers have shown permissible for the box. As far as the boxes are strong, they can be used for packing anything in a way in which the dimensional weight of the box does not become a problem. The problem of dimensional weight arises in relation to large boxes, which may be light in weight but occupies substantial space. Where moving boxes are not strong enough, even big ones can be used to pack only light material.

With strong boxes this problem rarely arises. Whether the boxes are small or big, both light and heavy objects can be packed into good boxes, so far as the space within it allows packing. The ideal way to use moving boxes is by making the contents a mixture of light and heavy objects so that the weight and volume balances well.
