As the weather outside gets cooler and fall sharply turns into winter, I know people start to get very unmotivated to stay in shape and get their daily exercise in. The shorter days tend to make people tired after work, and the thought of working out is thrown out the window as one drives by the gym. Nothing would have made me happier than to go home and curl up on my couch instead of working out yesterday. The weather conditions fit my mood perfectly. However, I then remembered why it is I workout. I work out because it is my daily happy pill. It keeps me sane. It's one hour of the day I have to myself. I have become so accustomed to exercising that it is as natural to me as brushing my teeth or taking a shower. I have engraved it in my daily life and nothing budges that appointment I have with myself and the other women named "Gym.
I think many people workout because they want to lose weight or build muscle. They want to fit in the clothes they haven't fit in for years. They want to feel better and have increased energy. There are many different reasons, yet what happens when all those goals are met? What ...
... happens when all|all of your clothes are too big? The high we get from reaching our goals is awesome! It lasts a long time, but then we seem to lose focus. The work-outs become boring no matter how much variety your fitness trainer uses. At home you might find yourself reaching for a piece of cake thinking, " I'm in my skinny jeans. It doesn't matter. The zest for working out|exercising is lost. What do we do now?!?!
I suppose my message today is that while all those reasons above are fantasic reasons to start working out, you need a reason that never expires. Perhaps it is because you want to ward off diseases that being overweight may bring. Have you ever thought of running a race that raises money for a certain issue? How about relay for life? Or there is an organization called Girls on the run which teaches young girls how to run their first 5k. It is amazing how working out does not seem to be exercising when you put a reason behind it. It might even be reasons like personal enjoyment, self-confidence, creating clarity or living a longer and healthier life. Those are all reasons that cannot be measured by a tape measure or scale.
On a personal noteAfter I broke my foot in June I promised myself that I would never create excuses to not work-out. At that point in time I would have given anything to have the ability to work-out. What if you didn't have the ability to go for a jog or simply walk outside. Think about those things the next time you do not want to work up a sweat.
