It is fully accepted that even the best designed website will miss the bus if it is not optimized to suit the idiosyncrasies of the search engines. That said, it has also to be accepted that search engine optimization alone will not ensure website promotion. Search engine optimization becomes the key to website promotion because, crawlers and spiders, which are the programs that come searching for the web pages to be indexed, have a rather blind way of choosing and rating the sites. If a site is well linked, and the contents are keyword rich, the site will be given a good ranking by the search engines even if the site design is nothing to write home about.

While SEO is definitely an affordable website promotion method, human beings who view the site are not blind like the search engines crawlers and spiders. Aesthetics and navigational facility of the site are important to them. Even if the contents of the site are satisfactory, an uninspiring web design may put off visitors. Whether the website design in itself is satisfactory or not, surfers may reach the site via the results produced by a search ...
... engine query, so far as the site contents are well optimized to suit search engine proclivities. However, further website promotion, on the recommendation of those who have seen the site, will be stalled completely if what they perceive there is unsatisfactory.

If, besides the contents of the site, the web site design is also good, there will be a lot of word of mouth or email website promotion done by those who have visited the site. This will naturally become a very affordable website promotion and this will be completely absent if the website design is not good. In other words, a site that is dull, with an organization and outlay that are not easy to decipher, will not aid website promotion by those who have seen it. An arresting web design will stop visitors on their tracks and force them to explore it further. An unattractive web design will work against website promotion because viewers tend to associate unsatisfactory web designs with unprofessionalism.

However, affordable website promotion tactics cannot stop with a good website design and right website contents. The web address has to be taken to as many people as possible, which means that a web owner must add his web, address to every advertisement and communication he makes. He must have his web address at the end of all his email communications, on his visiting card, on every brochure and pamphlet he distributes, on classified ads, press releases, his blogs, and his forum posts. All of these are effective website promotion tools.
