To become a great student, one ought to be academic. To succeed in business, one ought to be entrepreneurial. To be a great psychotherapist, one needs to be compassionate and has good listening skills. What these statements impart is the notion that to be good at doing certain things, one has to build and enhance certain skills. If you aspire to be a successful dental assistant, read on to find out what skills you need to develop.

One important skill to be honed is communication skill. A DA needs to work closely with dentist by assisting him or her in various duties. As such, clear and effective communication with dentist is of utmost importance so that the DA can carry out the duties as requested by the dentist. In other words, there is no miscommunication and the DA can serve the dentist to the best of his or her ability.

In addition to assisting dentists, a dental assistant will also deal with patients. Therefore, they also need to have good people skills so as to make the patients feel comfortable while undergoing dental treatment. Good communication skills are also implied as they need to respond to patients' ...
... inquiries and record appointments made by patients.

Moreover, a DA should also have good "chair assisting" skill, which is concerned with preparing necessary instruments for the dental procedures. Examples of duties that required this skill include handing the correct instruments and materials to dentists, setting up tray for dental procedures and sterilizing instruments. In addition, making patients feel at ease at the dental chair is also one duty that requires such skill.

The last skill that is good to be honed by dental assistants is dexterity. They will be performing duties such as making casts of the teeth from impressions, cleaning removable appliances, sterilizing instruments and making temporary crowns. Performing these tasks require the use of both hands. As such, it will be good if they can hone this skill through a set of exercises.
