When we talk about weekend getaways in Delhi, most of us come up with Nainital, Agra, Shimla, Bharatpur etc. During the week end, every one of us wants to leave the hustle-bustle of the city and do something exciting in the weekend. It's essential that you plan something that makes you feel rejuvenating and fresh when you get back to your busy schedule. Weekend getaways in Delhi are a great option to kill your boredom and experience something different. You will be astounded to find so many destinations near Delhi where you can spend your weekends along with your friends, family or loved ones. It can be an adventure, a relaxing holiday, a luxury holiday or just some place full of fun and frolic. Another feature of the city is that layered upon ruins and relics of several cities past, has grown organically (if haphazardly) over the centuries. This has also meant that several villages that were part of the cities of yore, or just small hamlets surrounding them, are now enmeshed into the fabric of today’s capital and these settings are good weekend Getaways in Delhi.

Delhi has a great deal to offer in terms ...
... of kids weekends in Delhi. Start your morning in South Indian culinary heaven or head to Old Delhi, whose tightly-packed market alleys, ranged off the main, crumbling Chandni Chowk boulevard, are best explored - to the delight of children old and young – by whizzing auto-rickshaws. The centre of the city, kids with a penchant for all things locomotive will enjoy a spin of the National Rail Museum, featuring some eleven acres-full of rail-related exhibitions and memorabilia, including the Fairy Queen, the world’s oldest still-running steam train, the saloon car of King Edward VII, and the skull of an elephant who unsuccessfully decided to charge full-tilt at a train. For those with more interest in all things celestial the ideal Kids Weekends in Delhi will lead to the peculiar terracotta forms of the Jantar Mantar (Sansad Marg, open 9am to dusk), an observatory constructed in 1725 by the Maharajah Jai Singh. Later little girls – or boys – with a profound love of dolls will appreciate a visit to Shankar’s International Doll Museum (Nehru House, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, open 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Sunday), wherein some 6500 of the playthings permanently reside. Before going home one can take a sunset stroll in the serene Lodi Gardens or a glance at the beautiful Baha’i House of Worship (also known as the Lotus Temple), though only reliably quiet children are encouraged to enter its meditation-orientated interior.

The Indian capital is a treasure trove for history and culture aficionados which also double up as family outing places in Delhi. Attractions topping the list are Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site worth a visit for its awe-inspiring architecture and the Qutub Minar complex, both of which you can explore with an audio guide. Worth visiting are the Red Fort, Mughal king Shah Jahan’s palace; Jama Masjid, a red sandstone and white marble structure built in the 17th century; Lodi Gardens, a great place for a picnic or a spot of exercise; India Gate, an imposing structure that’s a war memorial for Indian soldiers who fought for the British in World War I; the Garden of Five Senses, a sprawling, 20-acre site with trees, flowers, waterfalls, rocks, sculptures, murals, and spiral walkways; and the Parliament area and Diplomatic Enclave, where you can drive around and admire the gorgeous buildings. If you like to shop, New Delhi has a host of options to choose from. Markets such as Dilli Haat, Janpath, Khan Market, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, and Lajpath Nagar offer the very best in local products as well as bargain clothes, jewellery, accessories, etc.
