While progress may be a good thing for most people, there are some that don’t understand the importance or relevance of it to our lives. As long as we’re getting along fine, who needs progress? Why fix what ain’t broke?

If only life were as simple as that but the truth is, we need to embrace progress in order to be able to deal with the numerous changes that are creating such huge impact that it’s like we’ve been hit by a tsunami. As the world continues to revolve, so do the changes keep manifesting themselves and often, it is for the betterment of everyone.

Sometimes when we experience too much of a good thing we take it for granted until something happens that make us realize how much we can’t live without it. Take for instance the natural disasters that have plagued countries in the recent years – the loss of their internet and mobile connections have crippled them more than the loss of their homes and the lives of their countrymen. With all communication means down and out, who could’ve imagined how frustrating it could be to not be able to talk to anyone, let alone being unable to ask for ...
... help?

This is why when we hear of people who scoff at the importance of broadband and claiming that they don’t really need it, we wonder how they can live for as long as they have without realizing the benefits of such a wondrous invention? Do they not feel the need to be more informed about what’s happening outside their own little corner of the world? Do they not feel the need to update themselves, to learn a new skill or even finish college? Can some people really be adamant or resistant to change?

The fact that there are places in the world where internet access is still impossible due to geographical challenges has only made the powers-that-be more determined than ever to make sure these places become like the rest of the world – empowered with information. This is why the government has mandated that having broadband is a basic human right and whether or not you agree, just look around you and even the most stubborn and pig-headed person can’t fail to realize how much the internet is already influencing the lives of people around them even if they feel it is an unnecessary expense.

Just take a look at how businesses are able to expand their operation from a local to a worldwide level just because they got broadband. They have helped create new jobs as well as new industries that are in turn, helping the economy with the revenues and profits it creates. The very fact that you can turn your lights on at night and have a hot shower in the morning is a result of the best broadband service.

Public safety and security as well, has benefitted from broadband because companies are now able to do real-time background checks on potential employees, and as for your safety, broadband has enabled early warning regarding natural disasters and the creation of backup systems for public safety communication networks.

Other services like healthcare and education have also improved by leaps and bounds because of the resources that have become available to them. Broadband has enabled medical personnel to ably assist in underdeveloped areas via remote diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and consultations with specialists. In the same light, it has also enabled people with disabilities to ably express themselves via telecommunications relay services and video relay services.

If these reasons aren’t enough to convince you how important broadband really is, we don’t know what will. Hopefully, it’s not another natural disaster.
