Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October, 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. He specialised in Aeronautical Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology, and is a scientist and engineer by profession. He contributed in a major way to the development of India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle, SLV-III, which put the Rohini Satellite in the near earth orbit in July 1980, making India a member of the Space Club.

After two decades in ISRO, he was also associated with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He developed the AGNI and PRITHVI missiles during his tenure as Chief Executive of Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) and also made them operational. He was also the Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and Secretary, during which he led the weaponization of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests. He became India’s 11th Prime Minister in 2002, with the help of the ruling National Democratic Alliance.
