Sustainability is about ecology, economy and equity – Ralph Bicknese

India as a nation has a population of more than 1.2 billion and unfortunately, it is on a continuous upward spiral. More than 16% of the world’s population lives in India, which has led to a huge demand and consumption of resources. If you look at the broad picture, the demand and supply of these resources in the country is extremely unsustainable.

This leads to an ecological ambiguity, as the natural resources are consumed rapidly without a plan B. The Plan B in this case would definitely be adapting a sustainable pattern of living so that alternate resources can be created and used. The most important aspect of sustainability in India, at this point of time is ecological sustainability. It focuses on maintaining an ecological balance and conservation of natural resources.

Demand for a Sustainable Society

In respect to the Indian society, sustainability is the need of the hour. Ecological sustainability doesn’t imply just in preserving the natural resources and creating alternate energy resources. It also means adapting alternate ...
... ways and resource efficient ways to build the society. One of the best ways to work towards that is adapting the Green Building module of construction. It is one of the most ecologically responsible and effective way of construction which starts from the planning stage and goes through the designing, construction, maintenance and all the way to the demolition of a structure.

Important aspects of Sustainable construction

Green Building technology is seeing a lot of development in the country. Different technologies are being developed in order to harmonize with the current construction practices for creating greener structures. The main intent of green building is to reduce the general impact of the usual construction practices on the environment. Here are some of the most important aspects of adapting the green building module in the Indian construction market

Efficient use of energy by using clean sources of energy
Efficient use of water through water harvesting and recycling
Efficient use of other resources and materials
Reduce waste by recycling and reusing
Reduce Pollution
Improving the quality of indoor environment
Optimization of maintenance tools
Curb environmental degradation
Protecting the health of the residents and occupants
Increasing productivity and output

Goals of Sustainable Building

The primary goal of sustainable building techniques in India is to maintain and promote ecological sustainability. Apart from that there are other goals like social benefits and economic reasons, for which green construction should be assimilated in our current society. Another goal of sustainable building is to ensure that it complements and adds to the building design aspects like utility, comfort and durability.

Sustainable aspect of a building or construction can be measured by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. It helps in rating the layout, construction, operation and the overall maintenance of sustainable buildings and homes. Fortunately a lot of construction firms across the country have begun constructing ecologically sustainable homes and structures based on this LEED’s framework. There is still ample scope for improvement; as the green reform has just about started in India and still has a long way to go.
