Although you may be a very considerate and cautious young driver, your car insurance will usually still cost you more than for older drivers. Statistically younger people are more likely to have serious accidents than older drivers, so young people are considered high risk drivers. As many as one in five young drivers will crash in the first year of passing the driving test.

Once you reach the age of twenty-five your car insurance price will come down if have no driving convictions and you have not made any claims. Statistics show that drivers between the ages of fifty and seventy are least likely to cause an accident, so the closer you get to that age group the less you will pay for your car insurance.

For car insurance that is affordable if you are under twenty-five, you could take an advanced driving course, for example Pass Plus. These courses are an opportunity to learn how to drive defensively, in bad conditions and on roads that you cannot drive on while you are learning like the motorway. There are other advanced driving courses to teach you what to do, for example, in a skid, and how to get out of the ...
... situation safely. Your insurance company might give you a discount if you complete a course like this.

If you haven't got the money to pay a high car insurance premium, avoid getting a really powerful or sporty car. A small engine is safest for inexperienced drivers. Also, if you do bump a second hand car you might be able to live with a few scratches on the paintwork, but damage to a brand new car will reduce the value when you go to sell it on, or will cost money to repair. Even if you claim for the costs of repairs, you will lose out because your premium will be affected in the future.

There are other things you can do to reduce your premium, for example by getting a car with an engine immobiliser. If your parents are prepared to add you to their insurance it can be cheaper than you getting a separate policy. Some insurers allow you to build up a no claims discount if you are a named driver on someone else's policy, so check the terms and conditions.

Some companies specialise in younger drivers, or have special young driver policies. These are not necessarily cheaper than policies from other companies, so do not accept the first quote you get.

Young female drivers are less likely to make a large claim than young male drivers. The price of your quote will reflect this, and young women can benefit from cheaper deals through dedicated women only car insurance companies.

Shop around for you car insurance, for example through a price comparison website. Do make sure that the level of cover is right for you though, and don't be blinkered by price alone. For a slightly higher premium, there can be a big difference in service, so if you would need a hire car to get to work for example, you may wish to pay a little more for a policy that includes this if your car is stolen or out of action because of an accident.
