Kydex gun holsters have advantages over the traditional leather holster. Kydex is an extremely durable thermoplastic material, resistant to abrasion, has high impact strength and is waterproof, but is not as attractive as traditional leather. Kydex protects the gun from damage, yet the gun can be drawn easily. Kydex holsters are comfortable for concealed carry, the material is light and strong, and holsters can be made thinner, fitting closer to the body for better concealment. The lighter weight is welcome when carrying a gun, discomfort is a major reason people with concealed carry permits don’t carry their weapons.

Kydex holsters are smooth inside, allowing the gun to be withdrawn from the holster faster, with less drag than a holster made of leather. That extra speed can be crucial in a dangerous situation. Kydex is silent, it doesn’t squeak with movement, as leather can. Kydex gun holsters are easier on the finish of a carry gun. Most people, who carry a firearm, carry for protection, and keeping the finish pristine is not a top priority. If the finish of a gun has to remain in perfect condition, the gun should ...
... be in a case, not a holster. The Kydex case will wear the finish at the contact spots, but the wear does not spread leather holsters tend to wear the finish all over the gun, so the wear marks cover more of the gun.

Kydex is a rigid material, one can actually use the side of the holster to help clear a jammed slide or misfire from the gun, even one handed. It would be a good idea to practice manipulating the slide on the holster, one handed before it becomes necessary to do so under pressure. Kydex holsters lasts longer than leather, it is water proof, and stronger than leather, especially if used in a wet climate. Leather retains moisture, which can damage the gun, it takes a long time to dry leather, which can change shape in the process. Kydex can simply be dried with a towel and put back in service.

Kydex will retain its new appearance if washed with lukewarm water and mild soap. Leather is harder to keep clean and maintain. Most leather holsters can only be used as an outside the waistband (OWB)or inside the waistband (IWB) holster. With Kydex gun holsters, the holster can be switched from OWD to IWD by switching out clips with a screwdriver, so you need buy only one holster. Kydex is practical, leather is beautiful, and ultimately it’s the shooters choice.
