The revival is here, and your Exit The King tickets better be booked way in advance, lest you want to be sorely disappointed. Eugène Ionesco's brilliant absurdist drama is back on stage and with the fantastic combination of Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandron. Well, if you think that you've already seen these actors in their element in numerous Hollywood films, here's your chance to see them take acting to a level you never knew existed. They not only are the characters King Berenger and Queen Marguerite, but they also mould the characters into the most delightful Rush - Sarandron medley possible. And if you're still one of those asking, 'What's Exit The King about? Do you think I should get myself tickets?', here are five reasons why you should put this play on top of your 'must watch' list.

The Storyline

The play first premiered in 1962 and is the third part of Ionesco's 'Berenger Cycle' that tells the tale of King Berenger who could well be every insecure, depressed man. It takes off from the point where he is faced with impending death while still denying the obvious loss of his power and capabilities. What ...
... you are buying into when you get your Exit The King tickets is a mirror that captures all your own insecurities and worries. And while this might be a little discomfiting, there's nothing better than to sit and watch a two-hour long play on death when it stars the indomitable Rush and Sarandron.

The Cast

Both Oscar wining stars, Rush and Sarandron make the most of the wry physical humor this play demands. With grotesque exaggerated expressions and theatrics that almost border on cartooning, they keep you riveted and begging for more. With every subsequent revelation of absurdity and megalomania, you can't help feel the twinge of déjà vu. You will probably be grateful to your Exit the King tickets for allowing you access to this unmistakable mirror image. What you end up seeing on the stage is not King Berenger and Queen Marguerite, but a version of yourself stripped down to the bare core. And in the midst of the boisterous musings and introspections stands the rest of the able cast. These include Brian Hutchison who plays a palace guard, William Sadler, the court physician, astrologer, and executioner, Lauren Ambrose as Queen Marie the King's second wife and Andrea Martin who is the only remaining maid in the entire palace.

The Crew And The Sets

The play as you see it at the Ethel Barrymore Theater has been adapted by Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush. Under Armfield's direction the actors break across the quintessential fourth barrier in theatre, to speak to the audience while drawing them in at the same time. The sets and costumes have been designed by Dale Ferguson and represent everything that is decaying and degenerating in society yet with a certain artistic grotesqueness. The lighting by Damien Cooper hypnotizes the audience into forgetting that they sit on the other side of the stage. There is nearly too much going on to see oneself as apart from the King and his Queens. And as everything fades into darkness at the end, you realize you are gripping your Exit The King tickets tightly in your hand. Not because you are afraid of losing them. But because of the fact that the King could very well be you surrounded by everything you do to fight your mortality.

Tickets

The play opened end March and continues through June 14. While the shows are running packed there is a good chance of getting your Exit The King tickets if you book online. With this convenient facility now only a click away, all you have to do is chose your show, your tickets and your seats. All the information plays live in front of you with an actual seating chart that is the same the booking office holds. The only difference lies in you not having to stand in long, slow queues. So use an online portal to get your tickets and once you do, prepare yourself for a roller coaster ride to absurdity. It might be a little dilapidated and decadent, but it's a classic that will never go off the rails.
