Chimneys are valuable additions to factories and houses in colder countries around the world. Along with fireplaces, they serve to control the temperature of the room, thus making the people inside comfortable. Chimneys have been in use since the earliest times and many engineering modifications have been done to them in the recent years. Here in this article, we will discuss a few such developments and illustrate how they have been fundamental in improving the functionalities of chimneys.

Chimney Chase Covers

Chimney chase covers are metal fabricated caps that are placed on the top of chimney chases. They are not used with masonry chimneys but with boxes or chases that hold a factory-built chimney. The main aim of using chase covers is to protect the chimney from unwanted debris and rain as well as distance from animals and birds. Different types of chase covers are available for users. Keep in mind that the chase covers can vary in material, design and looks. Generally aluminum, copper, stainless steel and galvanized steel are used ...

Chimney Liners

The traditionally brick-built chimneys serve as support structures for the flues which safely carry various end products of combustion to the outside world. The inside walls of these flues should be sealed well throughout their entre lengths so that no harmful gases or other substances can pour out into the surrounding structure. Moreover, it must be understood that if the flues are not sealed tightly, acidic moisture emanating from products of combustion as well as from external sources can penetrate and ruin the chimney structure over time.

As a matter of fact, cracks in the flues can also lead to the release of harmful carbon monoxide gas or cause destructive, lethal fires. Due to these reasons, chimney liners form an essential aspect of the new chimney construction standards that were implemented after 1940. The market today offers two main liner types - flexible chimney liners and rigid chimney liners.

The flexible chimney liners consist of continuous lengths of thoroughly corrugated tubing that are built inside the flues. Rigid liners, on the other hand, are assembled from the segments of pipe and then lowered inside flue. Flexible liners are costlier than that of the rigid liners, but the installation costs for the rigid liners are usually more than that of the flexible ones.
