The wisdom tooth is any one of the four third molars, found in the back portion of the mouth. Wisdom teeth problems start when the affected tooth does not grow out completely from under the gum line. A tooth that does not erupt fully from under the gums (called “impacted” tooth) will have the tendency to grow sideways, and push against the surrounding teeth. This pushing motion often causes extreme pain, and can affect the other teeth surrounding the area, making it necessary to remove the impacted tooth using a wisdom extraction procedure.

Another wisdom tooth problem stems from poor oral hygiene. The location of the tooth, under the gum line, makes it nearly impossible for the wisdom tooth to be thoroughly cleaned by tooth brushing, or even with the use of dental floss. This tooth becomes highly susceptible to tooth decay; when the tooth becomes badly decayed, a tooth extraction is needed.

Wisdom tooth extraction is necessary to provide permanent pain relief, and also to stop the spread of infection to other parts of the mouth (and to the surrounding teeth).

Procedure for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

... The first step in a wisdom tooth extraction is the numbing of the area where the affected tooth is located. This is done by injecting the area with a local anesthetic, to make sure that no pain will be felt during the extraction. In cases when two or more wisdom teeth will be extracted in one appointment, general anesthesia may be considered as a pain control method.

After the area is made completely numb, the gums will be cut open to expose the affected tooth underneath. If the wisdom tooth is surrounded by bone tissue, this will also be removed by the dentist in preparation for the tooth extraction.

Any other tissue connecting the tooth to the jawbone will be removed by the dentist before the wisdom tooth can be extracted.

The wisdom tooth will be extracted and pulled out from under the gum line. If the position of the tooth makes it impossible to remove the tooth in one piece, the dental surgeon will need to cut the tooth into smaller pieces so that they can be removed more easily. All of the pieces of the tooth will be removed to ensure that the infection will not spread to other areas of the mouth.

The gums will be stitched and closed after the impacted wisdom tooth has been removed.
