Katan Silk Sarees are made from Katan Silk, or silk obtained from the twisting of silk yarn filaments into thread and then weaving these threads. Embellished with rich patterns of gold or silver zari, these Sarees are grand creations of silk and finery,
Katan is a silk thread made by twisting a number of silk filaments made from silk yarn. These twisted threads are then used for weaving a pure Katan Silk Saree.
Katan Silk Sarees are plain silk fabrics that were once woven by hand alone with plenty of adornments of beautiful patterns and woven motifs on them. Today they are also woven on power looms and then decorated with designs, woven patterns and printed motifs.
Katan Silk is also used for making brocades known as Pothans which are closely woven and light in texture, with a major portion of the patterns on it, being either of gold or silver zari. Pothans are characterized by the use of netting (jal) on them, made out of silver and Tilla (zari thread).

Indian handloom fabrics have a rich traditional fare from Pashmina Silk to the Kanjeevaram or Kanchipuram Saree, from Kota Doria of Rajasthan and the Patola Weaves of Gujarat to the Bengal Silks. And Katan Silk has been innovatively used to combine with these different varieties, across the length and breadth of the country.
