Dental Continuing Professional Development courses are common nowadays, unlike in the past. In this fast moving age of information, new researches and development in any given field are taking place almost on daily basis. This makes it important for working professionals to undertake CPD courses to keep one’s self abreast with the latest protocols of dental treatment and new researches.

Unlike yesteryears, dental CPDs are quiet encouraged by the dental governing bodies, as well in any given country. The working licenses of the dental professionals are not renewed unless they show proof that they had undertaken these CPD courses. This is important in order to keep the dentist and the dental team members aware of the new protocols. Many dentists and dental team members who had completed their university and college years ago, find it hard to keep going back to school to learn new clinical procedures that are preferred over the ones they learnt during their times. Therefore, in such scenarios, instead of the dental professionals going back to school to gain formal training, with the cost of discontinuing their ...
... practise, can undertake dental CPD courses and can acquire not just the theoretical knowledge in latest treatment protocol but also new clinical skills. It is not uncommon that most CPD courses also offer on hands training which are quiet beneficial, as the dentists can work on dummies and practise the current protocols that are being followed and in furthering the scope of their private practises. Private set ups as well as hospital set ups, encourage their dental professionals to enrol in such courses.

The duration of these continuing professional development courses varies according to different courses. The annual dental conferences that are held in every country for example, ADEEC which was a 3 day conference held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates or the IASDR conferences held all over the world helps the dental work force be knowledgeable about the changing trends of dentistry. These conferences are focused on the current problem-solving protocols, in maintaining and developing knowledge and skills to ensure that the professionals offer up to date and latest treatment to their patients. Continuing Professional Development includes courses, conferences and workshops.

Some courses are not just based on the dental treatments, but also the management and the legal aspects of the dental setup are discussed in such conferences that can help dental professionals to manage their private clinics well while providing better care to the dentition of their society. There are some professional development courses that require dentists to travel to another country to show their clinical skills in order for them to award the dentists with the certificate for the courses. In some cases where the dental professional can not travel to the venue where the courses are held, online CPD’s are available too.

The advantages of these continuing professional development courses is not just to acquire and maintain the clinical treatments and problem based learning, but also help in personal and professional development of the dentist so as to ensure that their dental practise is successful.
