People have a love-hate relationship with wines, but some are just too eager to move on to the next bottle. Such situations, among many others, identify who wine lover and the wine expert is. Easily, trained wine professionals or sommeliers or can spot the difference. When you have just discovered a love for wines, be ready for the wonderful world of knowing and tasting the classic drink people adore.

Speaking of surprises, a sommelier – someone whose passion for wines has become a job and a lifestyle – will impress you. Taking you far beyond the basics of wines, where they come from, their varieties and the best food and cheeses to pair them with, a sommelier is expected to know every bottle in the cellar and help you choose the best one for you.

Wine experts can attest to the fact that when it comes to wine, you will be pleasantly surprised in many ways. When in a restaurant known for its outstanding bottles, you can ask the wine expert whatever it is that you need clarified about the wine you will be having for the night. Trained sommeliers can tell you interesting things about wines, and you will leave ...
... the diner learning more than you think you already know.

Here are some questions you can ask:

Saying "I think kind of wine is just amazing. Do you have anything similar?" enables the sommelier to easily select the best for you, as you have given him or her clearer idea of your preferred taste. You can expect to be provided detailed information about the full spectrum of your preference.

When you ask "I've never heard of this type; what's to love about it?" you are giving the wine expert an opportunity to talk endlessly about the bottle, which is basically what she or he does. When dining with a group, this question may sound embarrassing, but you never know others are dying to ask it too.

"Which wine goes best with the food we ordered?" This is fairly common, and sommeliers love answering them time and again. They're good at it and will give you a straight and satisfying answer. It's what they have been trained to do – help you get the most out of your wine experience as you dine in their bistro or restaurant.

When you want to experience what the majority is enjoying, you can ask "What is everybody drinking now?" and the wine expert will gladly tell you the best-selling bottles they have, and the good reasons why they are. They will tell you too, the best dishes in the menu that can go with this choice.

It is important to exercise care and caution when asking the wine expert attending to you (and be polite – that is out of the question). Also, you need to be honest about how far you know certain bottles as well. Diners who are familiar with wines know how and what to ask, while some simply pretend to know; you bet you sommelier can tell!

In deciding to seek a sommelier's help at a dinner, you have the freedom to ask and take advantage of his or her expertise in everything from the herbaceous Sav Blanc to the fairly light and fruity Pinot Noir. Ask what you must, and make dining with your favorite wine an experience you will never forget.
