Effective Web Design For Small Businesses
Almost all small businesses face one common mistake when they first employ a Web Designer or start up a web site for their own business - Over Design.
It is natural everyone wants to be the best company out there, from name cards to web sites. However, most small business owners forget to ask themselves what is the main purpose of the website in the first place. Do you want to create an impressive web site that wows your visitors or a simple effective site that converts them? To me, I work on the latter. Majority of the small businesses do not have the budget to create a top-notch design web site in the first place as well, so why not focus on the conversions to increase sales?
The following are the 3 main components you should focus when designing your small business web site:
The first component is - What you are doing? You have to be very clear on this. There must be one page in your site that clearly describes what problems you are solving. Do not get side-track telling people about the features of your products and the guarantees up front. You have to convince your visitors that your product / ...
... services will solve their problems first before asking them to take actions.
The second element is - Who are you? Do not be secretive here. Businesses do not want to have business deals with anyone who does not reveal who they are. We are doing businesses, and most importantly, you are building up the trust factor in your web site so that your visitors or prospects are comfortable with you before they send you the check.
Displaying your business logo clearly will certainly help your visitors to be aware of where are they now and lower their defense while surfing around your site (assuming that you have your logo displayed in every page).
The third element is - Can you deliver results? It does not matter when you are big, because everything you do is for branding. However, failing to comply to this factor is a life and death situation. For small businesses, results are the most important when it comes to promoting your products and services to your customers (to-be). Never say without showing. Most web sites out there say that they are the best. Instead, show what you have done. Some examples can be your portfolio, or even testimonials from your customers!
Regardless of what web layout you choose for your site eventually, you need to address the above points in order to maximize your web site potential to help you capturing leads. With the above 3 elements integrated into your web site, even a simple layout will be able to convert your targeted prospect.
