Like any electric bulbs, whether that would be a flashlight bulb or an incandescent bulb, projector bulbs generate heat. However, compared to a number of bulbs, they generate much more heat and, thus, can fail anytime without you expecting it. They shine brighter than any other bulbs and are therefore more sensitive especially when in use. The reason some projector lamps do not last as long as they should is misuse either of the bulbs themselves or the projector. When the device runs it is vulnerable to damage when not used appropriately. There are a few tips to make your bulb last the maximum time.

1) Operating the projector at the lowest setting that is just bright enough ensures your bulb to last longer and it will consume lower electric power. Most projectors have adjustable brightness. Turning the brightness down could add hours to the life of the projector lamp, so the need to purchase a new bulb as a replacement does not necessarily come soon. For instance, the bulb that is set at 2000 lumens of brightness can last for up to 2000 hours. But if it is dimmed to 1600 lumens, it can last for up to 3000 hours. ...
... That means you can prolong its life by 1000 hours.

2) Like most equipment, projectors need regular cleaning. Dust and dirt may collect on surfaces and seep into the internal parts. Keeping the filter clean can be an advantage. Ask your dealer about cleaning products that work best for your device. Clean up the filter once in 3 months to avoid stubborn dirt and dust from collecting into the filter and staying too long inside. Dirt can lower the efficiency of the equipment. Since the bulb itself may catch dust, simply blow the dust away.

3) Regularly check the fan of the projector to see if it is working well. Check if it is at its best working properly. When it starts to blow less air or emits noise, have a projector technician check it. The fan works to blow away heat from the bulb to keep it cool, and if it does not work effectively, it lowers the efficiency and lifespan of the bulb as well. When projector lamps get so hot, they last shorter.

4) Moving the projector while in use is never advised. Upon use the device is too sensitive. Movement while the bulb is still hot is also not recommended as it may burst. It is advised to wait for about five minutes after switching off the equipment before moving or transferring it to another place.

5) The projector should be kept in a safe room with enough space for it to avoid other objects to bump to it. The temperature of the room should also be checked. Maintaining the temperature in the room is a must as abrupt shifts from hot to cold and back can lower the life of your bulb.

6) Allowing the lamp to cool is another key to making it last longer. Not allowing the bulb to adjust to surrounding temperature shortens its life. For instance, after turning off the device, allow it to stand for a few minutes before transporting or moving the bulb itself. Also, when the equipment powers down do not attempt to move it. Check with dealers regarding safety in turning off and moving your equipment as different models of projectors may have slightly different settings.

7) You might have realized now how temperature is essential to the life of your device. If you are transporting projector equipment, say from home to office, and you stack it in the back of the car, do not leave it there especially when it is scorching hot. Cars under a hot summer sun can heat up to temperatures damaging to the projector and its bulb. Thus, leaving the device inside your car without air-conditioning is never advised. Another thing when it comes to temperatures is to not immediately switch on the projector lamp upon bringing it indoors or in the office after being exposed to outdoor cold during a winter day. The sudden change in ambient temperature shortens the bulb life. In worst cases, the bulb may burst.
