India occupies more than 2% land on earth and is the second largest populated nation in the world. The 1.2 billion residents of India amount to 16% of the world population. Based on these figures, it is clear that the consumption of resources is much higher in India than most other parts of the world. In technical terms, it means the use of natural resources in India is extremely unsustainable. Due to this, India is undergoing a rapid change of ecological degradation at a startling rate.

A lot of pressure is being placed on the natural resources in the country and the land to meet the demands of the ever increasing population. The best way to deal with this mismanagement of natural resources and cultivable land is adapting a sustainable lifestyle.
What is Sustainability?

On a broad sense, sustainability meaning differs from society to society. In some parts of the world environmental sustainability is the need of the hour, whereas in other places economic and social sustainability is considered important. For the Indian society, environmental sustainability is of extreme importance due to the humongous population ...
... of the nation. In simple terms environmental sustainability is a process of making the right decisions to protect the ecology with an intention of preserving the same resources for the future generations.

Why is Environmental Sustainability Essential in India?

It is imperative for India to turn into a sustainable society because the natural resources in the country are fast depleting, which is a cause of alarm. Here are some of the common ecological concerns in India that demand environmental sustainability.

• Environmental pollution due to consumption of fossil fuels
• Pollution of the ocean due to releasing toxic chemicals from major industries
• Over fishing in the water bodies are making certain species of fish extinct
• Deforestation through logging and agricultural activities
• Unsustainable farming activities cause damage to cultivable agricultural land
• Fast depleting natural resources due to over consumption of the same.

The Indian Government has come up with various initiatives in collaboration with NGO’s and the corporate structure. The corporate sector has come up with initiatives of corporate responsibility that help to address concerns that hinder India’s transformation to a sustainable society. Some of the initiatives under the same are as follows.

• Recycling to reduce waste and convert the same into newer materials
• Producing newer forms of renewable energy sources.
• Using green technology in the industrial sector to help reduce the carbon footprints in the environment.
• Manufacturing energy saving devices like CFL and LED lights or hybrid cars that help save fuel.
• Waste management techniques that reduce environmental pollution
• Using renewable energy sources for manufacturing and transportation purposes.

With the changing attitudes of people, there is a lot of improvement in the society and hence the sustainability meaning has been changing in the society. With time India is eventually adapting the sustainability principle of living and turning in to a better and sustainable society. There is a lot of scope for improvement, but the overall change is definitely looking positive for India.
