India is one of the most populated nations on the planet.
Unfortunately it doesn’t count as one of the most educated nations in the world. Education has always been the primary catalyst to bring about any type of social change around the world. In the Indian society too, education plays a vital part for any major development that is needed. An important social change that is needed in the Indian society is to adapt a sustainable lifestyle and the best way to promote it is through quality education.

The Role of Education in a Sustainable Society

A sustainable lifestyle can only be a part of the Indian society if people understand the importance of sustainability. The best way to adapt sustainability is through education, because a sustainable society is a well educated society in all its elements. The importance of education in India cannot be disregarded as education is essential for development, equality, productivity and creating a livelihood for the population. On a broader perspective, education is also important for overall human development too. Through education, the importance of a sustainable ...
... society can be taught to the students from a young age. Here are some of the important functions of education for the society.

• Education is responsible for inculcating the right skills in the students (youth) that are required for a progressive society
• Education will allow the next generation of Indians to adapt the ability to become employment worthy in the corporate sector
• It helps the future generation understand the relationship of the society and the environment and hence helps in learning sustainability
• Education makes students worthy of becoming future leaders, academicians, scientists and decision makers.

Although education is important for the overall development of the Indian society, it is imperative that the quality of education is high. In terms of quality education India is definitely one of the nations that are looked up to. India is home to some of the world class management school; however, the quality education is only offered in private/commercial schools in big cities. The rural and tribal areas are offered basic education which may not help them land in better positions in the corporate sector.

Lack of Quality Education

In most cases the basic education provided by Government run schools is not focused on providing quality education. The importance of education is not taken seriously in the rural areas due to different reasons like improper infrastructure for the students, lack of quality education in rural areas, inequality, improper sanitation etc. Though there is enough funding provided for world class education in the rural and tribal areas of the country, the quality of education provided in these areas is literally throw-away.

If the government provides basic amenities, promotes and provides a better standard of education in rural India, the overall quality of education in India will definitely improve. For providing overall quality education India needs to focus on improving the standard of education that is provided in rural and tribal areas. Volunteer community service projects and NGO’s that have a wider reach in such areas can promote the importance of quality education. All these factors would make India one of the most educated societies in the world and also promote the cause of sustainable living.
