Internet Marketing Versus Traditional Marketing

Well the debate goes on, doesn't it? Traditional marketing against Internet Marketing. I have been marketing for over 20 years, as a matter of fact anyone in business has some knowledge of marketing. You must have, otherwise you would not be in business.

So what is the difference, well first lets take a look at what's changed. When the Industrial age came into being the world saw a huge change in how business was done. The barter system died, shops and stores opened and a whole new way of business came to being. Robert Kiyosaki of rich Dad Poor Dad fame, believes that the Berlin wall coming down also marked the beginning of the INFORMATION AGE. I happen to agree, so what's this got to do with Marketing?. Everything! one of the first principles is product and then Market. So now you have a choice, do you reach a global market or a local market. Of course the product is important, but has the shift now gone to the market size. Do you deal in a small market or an unlimited market. This to me is the primary change that we are undergoing.

Also the set up costs from a business perspective, has now completely altered. ...
... Traditionally you found a product or an idea, looked at your market, found a premises, fit it out and open your doors. You advertised etc, etc, you know the deal,. If you were out the gap for 150k you had done well. After that you spent money every month on advertising, promotion etc. Now you can do the same online, for a fraction of the cost, but cost there is. I do not believe that their is any quick fix, on line. However if you have a good system then you are half way there.
The main difference now with being on line is the system is as important, as the product. Before the product was paramount, now you can even choose the product, afterwards. We now have expressions like Niche Marketing, Micro niche. All of these are just terms, for who is going to buy your product. A Lot of what is currently being sold is information products, the real challenge is yet to come, large Bulky physical products. How do we get these moving on line.

So where will retail go, in my opinion, its going to tier. Two markets will continue, the low end, cheap, low cost product and the ultra high end, where people will want service, service and more service. I believe that anyone in the middle market will have problems, unless they have a mix of on line marketing and physical presence. No longer will it do to be 'on-line' with a picture of the front of the store and directions. The phone book web site is finished. Also consider the up and coming generations, are using the Internet every single day, for everything. Just have a look at the impact on the music industry, when it began many years ago, it was all about the concert. Then about record sales on vinyl, then cd, now download. And because of the free information on the net, the record industry is being effected. So guess what?, they are now more concerts than ever.

To sum up, all I know is that information is moving quicker than ever. So my attitude is, if you are not in, you can't win. I am currently learning every day, the Guru I have decided to follow is Matt Bacak. If you want to check out, the latest from him, check out the link.
