What is satellite television?
Satellite television is a television delivered by means of communication satellite and received by satellite dish and set-top box. In many parts of the world it provides range of channels and services often to the areas that are not services by terrestrial or cable TV providers.

History of satellite television
The first satellite television signal was relayed from Europe to the Telstar satellite over North America in the year 1962. The first geosynchronous communication satellite was launched in the year 1963. The world's first commercial satellite was called Intelsa, nicknamed as Early Bird, was launched on April 6th, 1965.The first national network of satellite television called Orbitra was created in Soviet Union in the year 1967.

Technology used by satellite television providers
The satellites used for television signals are generally in highly elliptical or geostationary orbit above the equator of the earth. Satellite television like any other communication signal relayed by a satellite starts with a transmitting ...
... antenna located at an uplink facility.

The uplink satellite dishes are quite larger which can be as much 9 to 12 meters. The diameter is about 30 to 40 feet and this increased diameter results in more accurate aiming and increased signal strength of the satellite. The uplink dish is pointed towards a specific satellite and the uplinked signals are transmitted within a specific frequency range so as to be received by one of the transponders which is tuned to that range of frequency aboard that satellite.

This transponder retransmits the signals back to the Earth with a different frequency band which is known as translation which is typically in 4-8 GHz or 12-18 GHz. The leg of the signal path from the satellite to the receiving earth station is called downlink.
How TV satellite works.

When satellite television first hit the market in early 1990, the home digital TV dishes were quite expensive. It generally took up a huge chunk of yard space. In the early days only the die-hard TV lovers would go through all hassles and expense of putting their own dish TV. During those days satellite TV was much harder to get than broadcast and digital dish TV service.

Today, most of the homes use satellite dishes perched on their rooftops. Even in rural areas which are far beyond the reach of cable companies, you will find dish antennas in one of the each house. Most of the major satellite TV companies are luring more customers' everyday through TV commercials, hoardings, movies, sporting events and news from around the world. The satellite TV providers promise to offer quality picture and sound.

Satellite TV offers many solutions to broadcast and cable TV problems. Though the technology of digital dish TV is evolving, it has already become popular choice among the viewers. Nowadays cable TV is not easy to live with. Millions of people were once entangled in miles of coaxial cables, weighed by hefty cost of different plans and saddled with dozens of channels which they unlikely watched.

Today, satellite TV is no longer an obscure or exclusively club for people with fat wallets and lavish lifestyles. Presently, there are two major providers of satellite TV connection; these are Dish Network and Direct TV. Each one of them offers various channels and several low cost options for their services. In addition to it, these digital dish TV providers give you the freedom from biding hassles of your local cable TV company.
