Five Steps To Cutting Your Car Insurance
One of the most expensive aspects of vehicle ownership is the cost of insurance. There is no getting around this, as it is illegal to drive without insurance, but there are a few things that you can do to keep your insurance premium in check.
Avoid big, expensive, fast cars. Insurance companies use a ratings scale that goes from one to twenty to assess the relative risk of insuring different types of cars. A small, cheap, slow car is less likely to be involved in an accident and will cost less to repair or replace than a bigger, faster, more valuable car, and this is reflected in their insurance rating. For example, a one litre Nissan Micra would be given the insurance rating of one, whereas a Ferrari F40 would be given the insurance rating of twenty.
1. If you are going to have anyone else driving the vehicle aside from yourself, then you need to have their details listed on the insurance policy. Listing additional drivers on your policy can increase the cost of your premium quite dramatically.
2. Rather than listing all the possible drivers of your vehicle on your main policy, it might be a lot cheaper ...
... to add them for a limited time period as and when they need to use the vehicle.
3. The percentage amount of any claim that you have to pay yourself is known as the excess. By agreeing to pay a higher excess on any claims that you make, you can drive the cost of your premium down, but if you cannot afford the amount in question, you will not be able to claim at all, so it is wise to bear this in mind before you commit.
4. Avoid making small claims. If you do not claim on your car insurance for several years, your no claims discount can add up to quite a substantial amount. However, you can lose this if you make a claim, so before you do, factor in the increased costs involved in losing your discount and weigh up whether you would be better off paying for a repair yourself.
5. One of the main ways in which insurance companies manage to get new customers is by offering cheaper car insurance to customers who switch their insurance over to them. However, you should beware of firms that have not been around for long, or do not have the same levels of accreditation as their more established rivals.
Many of the best deals can be found online, and this is also by far the most convenient method for all concerned. In fact, some insurers may offer you a special discount for purchasing your insurance in this way, so if you have an internet connection, this is definitely the best way to go.
