Your Guide To Shopping For Low Energy Appliances
The UK spends more on electrical appliances for the home each year than any other country in Europe. Advancing technologies mean that we now rely on electronic goods more and more for our information, communication and for own enjoyment. Powering all of this new equipment costs money and uses energy.
Firstly, you can look out for products labelled by one of several energy saving bodies. Energy Saving Recommended labels products that are preferable for their more limited use of electricity, and their logo can be found on many appliances within the UK.
1. The second logo to look for is the Energy Star logo. This appears on home electronic products that meet the energy efficient standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. You will find their logo on a range of home electronics appliances, but not on ovens and oven hobs.
2. And lastly there is the EnergyGuide label. This label provides a guide to the energy usage of each appliance, with its estimated energy consumption and a rating as to how efficient this consumption is. These are found on many goods for the home, including ...
... fridges and freezers.
3. Another tip is to look for appliances that are integrated. So instead of buying a separate TV and set-top box, opt for a TV that has a digital receiver built in. This way you will use less electricity, and will save yourself the cost of having to power two appliances.
4.Energy saving features are now common in many consumer electronics goods. Several appliance types now come equipped with automatic standby, meaning that your appliance will shut down to standby automatically when they are not in use. Although switching them off at the mains is more efficient, standby mode is better than leaving your appliance on full power.
5. The type of television that you choose can have a great bearing on energy usage. 3 times more energy can be needed to power a flat screen television than is needed to power a regular model. Those looking for a flat screen set should consider the LCD type as they offer far greater efficiency than plasma TVs.
Our last piece of advice is to do your research. Learn what the logos mean, and when you are out shopping, do not be afraid to ask sales assistants for all of the energy efficient information that they have for the appliances that you are looking for.
