There can be little else quite as terrifying as being diagnosed with cancer. Without treatment, it could be a death sentence and unfortunately one that claims the lives of tens of thousands of Americans every year. An oral cancer diagnosis can be particularly devastating because it is known to go hand-in-hand with terrible and painful symptoms, especially in the latter phases of development.

“Prevention is better than cure and an integral part of prevention is awareness,” say Stratford dental implants surgeons. “We are always open to speaking to patients about oral cancer, its symptoms, causes and what puts certain people at risk in an effort to spread awareness. If you are aware of your risk status and the various warning signs to look out for, then you will be far more likely to catch oral cancer in its beginning stages. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are literally the keys to surviving this terrible disease.”

And so, in an effort to spread awareness, we spoke to a dental implants surgeon who routinely treats Connecticut patients for tooth loss. These two fields – dental implantology and ...
... oncology - may seem unrelated, but when you consider that the lifestyle choices and bad habits that lead to tooth loss can also cause cancer, a more appreciable link can be established.

What Is Cancer?

Cancer is a prevalent disease that affects a frightening percentage of the population at some stage during their lives. It’s caused by the abnormal and rampant growth of cells. This leads to the formation of lumps or growths that expand so uncontrollably, they end up doing terrible damage to the surrounding tissues in the body.

“Oral cancer typically presents as a sore, ulcer or growth in the mouth. However, the difference between this disease and “garden variety” ulcers and sores is that it does not heal and go away… or else it reoccurs,” explains the dental implants surgeon near Stratford, Connecticut. “These anomalies can appear anywhere in the oral cavity, including the tongue, lips, inner cheeks, soft and hard palate and the throat.”

The cold hard reality of this terrible disease is that, in practically 100% of cases, it is fatal if not caught and treated at an early stage. It’s not the most common of the cancers that affect American citizens – accounting for only 5% of cancer cases in the States – but this statistic is worthless if you are unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with it.

This is why it’s important that everyone has an idea of what to look out for and when to seek professional medical attention.

Who Is Most at Risk of Oral Cancer

The people at the very greatest risk of developing oral cancer are men who are more than 50 years old. This demographic group accounts for 70% of all oral cancer cases in the United States. There are other risk factors involved and these will be explored in Part 2…
